Student Recruitment

The Software Engineering Institute at Peking University (PKU-SEI) encourages prospective students to apply for enrollment into the graduate program of PKU-SEI. PKU-SEI adopts a unified way of graduate student enrollment. Each graduate student (i.e., a PhD student or a master student) will enroll into PKU-SEI, but the student will discuss with potential advisors in PKU-SEI to decide his or her advisor after enrollment. Each PhD student will have a PhD committee chaired by his or her advisor. PKU-SEI also provides internship positions for excellent undergraduate students. Each year PKU-SEI selects a number of excellent undergraduate students and provides them with research training similar to graduate students.

The past graduate students in PKU-SEI have achieved remarkable achievements in various aspects. The following lists selected awards won by these students:

• 6 China Computer Federation (CCF) Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Awards（2006，2007，2010，2012，2013, 2019）

• 7 ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Awards (ICSE 2004，ASE 2009，FSE 2010, ISSTA 2017, ICPC 2018, ISSTA 2019, ASE 2019)

• 8 IBM PhD Fellowships (2006，2007，2008，2009，2010，2012，2013，2014)

• 6 Microsoft PhD Fellowships (2005，2007，2009，2015, 2016, 2017)

• 2 Peking University “4th of May” Medals (2006，2014)

International Connections

PKU-SEI has close collaborations with many institutes and universities in China and oversea, such as MIT, UC Berkeley, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Yale University, Ohio State University, University of Tokyo, Japan National Institute of Intelligence, Canada University of Waterloo, University of Technology, Sydney, Queen's University, University of Westminster.

PKU-SEI also has partnerships with many major companies in the industry, such as Huawei, Digital China, Kingdee Middleware, Zhongchuang Software, IBM Research China, Microsoft Research Asia, Avaya Lab.

Every year, 30-40 faculty/students at PKU-SEI travel abroad to attend international conferences and participate in technical cooperation. Doctoral students and outstanding master students have opportunities to travel abroad for research exchange programs.    

Employment after Graduation

In addition to going abroad for further study, PKU-SEI graduates are employed by various universities, research institutions, and companies. Overseas universities include UC Berkeley, CMU, UWashington, UT Austin, National University of Singapore, etc. Employers include Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tianjin University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, University of Texas at San Antonia, China Office, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, key central State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) such as China Mobile, Bank of China Headquarters, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of Communications, well-known domestic enterprises such as Huawei, Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, and oversea enterprises such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Goldman Sachs, and UBS Securities, etc.
