About Us

The Software Engineering Institute at Peking University (PKU-SEI) is a research and teaching institute founded in 1999, with its predecessor being the Software Engineering Office established in the Computer Science Department at Peking University in 1983. Prof. Fuqing Yang is the founder of PKU-SEI. Currently, PKU-SEI consists of 34 researchers, including three Chinese Academy of Sciences Academicians and four IEEE Fellows, and becomes the largest research institute in the field of software engineering in China.

PKU-SEI focuses on both conducting academic research and improving software engineering practices in industry. It aims at conducting research for the Chinese government, cultivating talents, and promoting software foundations and technologies. The research areas of PKU-SEI cover software engineering, systems engineering, knowledge engineering, programming languages, ubiquitous computing, and many other aspects of computing.

PKU-SEI works with partners across the Chinese government, industry, and academia worldwide. These broad partnerships enable PKU-SEI to take innovations from research to practice, closing the gap between research and practice. Now it is the largest research institute in the field of software engineering in China, and ranked No.1 in software engineering according to CS ranking in 2019.
