On October 19, 2017, the 2017 Microsoft Fellowship hosted by Microsoft Research Asia was announced. Lu Xuan, a Ph.D. student in Software Engineering Institute and the Key Lab of High-Confidence Software Technology of the Ministry of Education, is on the list. She is also the only female winner this year.

During the 19th Symposium of the 21st Century Computing, Lu Xuan, together with nine other winners, accepted the award from Dr. Peter Lee, Global Senior Vice President of Microsoft Corporation and Dr. Xiaowen Hong, Chairman of R & D Group and Dean of Microsoft Research Asia. In addition, they were invited to have a discussion with Professor John Hopcroft, the winner of the 1986 Turing Award and Director of the Center for Frontier Computing Research Science of Peking University.

Xuan Lu graduated from School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in Peking University and has been pursuing a Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Hong Mei and Professor Xuanzhe Liu (a 2007 Microsoft PhD Fellowship Winner) since 2016. Her research interest is user behavior analysis of mobile applications. So far, she has published more than ten papers in top-tier conferences and journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE), the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), and the ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp), etc.

This year's selection has attracted more than a hundred doctoral students from nearly 40 well-known universities and research institutions in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and other regions and countries. After online review, interview, and rigorous review by the jury, a total of 10 outstanding students stood out, received a $ 10,000 grant from Microsoft Research, and at least 3 months of internship opportunities at Microsoft Research Asia.

The Microsoft PhD Fellowship Program was launched by Microsoft Research Asia in 1999. It is aimed at doctoral students in computer science and technology-related fields in the Asia-Pacific region. It aims to discover, support, and encourage promising younger doctoral students to better conduct research.
