The 2019 annual meeting of the China-Russia joint project, Research and Development of Meta Cloud Computing Environment, was held on Dec 13, 2019 in Peking University, Beijing. Researchers from Moscow State University, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Huazhong University of Science & Technology reported and discussed their research progress. The 2020 annual meeting will be held in Moscow, Russia.
The “Research and development of Meta-Cloud Computing Environment” is a 3-year joint project supported by the China-Russia Inter-governmental Science & Technology Cooperation Program, from Jan 2018 to Dec 2020. The Russian side responsible unit is Moscow State University, with a total of thirty million Russian ruble funding from the Ministry of Science and Education of Russia. Prof. Ruslan Smelyanskiy is the leader of both the Russian side and the joint project. The Chinese side responsible unit is Peking University, together with Tsinghua University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, with a total of 2.99 million RMB funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Prof. Xiangqun Chen is the leader of Chinese side.
Meta Cloud Computing Environment (MC2E) is a test-bed for academic multidisciplinary research based on the principle of federation. The mission of the project is to develop the research environment as a federation of heterogeneous cloud datacenters and HPC centers from every participating country. Currently the parties are working hard to set up a Meta Cloud Computing Environment for HPC, especially virtualizing and connecting the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer (ranked No.1 in the TOP500 lists from June 2016 to June 2018, now No.3 in the list) with public cloud such as AliCloud, Amazon Cloud, and some private clouds in PKU and MSU. With such efforts, the traditionally expensive, hard to use HPC and supercomputer resources can be reused as easily as using a cloud.
